Doris Jones

Doris Mae Deviese Jones of Edgewood, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the age of 93. Born February 17, 1924 in Wellsburg, WV to Russell E. Deviese (a barber and insurance salesman) and Minnie K. Deviese. Doris pursued education and community service for herself and her family most of her life. In the turbulent days leading to World War II, Doris after briefly attending nursing school headed off to Morgantown to go to the University of WV and attend Pharmacy School. Two weeks into classes, and despite "wartime" issues, Doris and her other female classmate, were unceremoniously told that women "would not have the stamina" to complete the requirements of the Pharmacy capstone course, and they should "take up chemistry". Doris then switched to chemistry, worked at Weirton Steel as a metallurgist in spectroscopy pursuing this path till she met her future husband, Clarence Irwin Jones Jr. while attending WVU. Doris and Clarence were married and relocated to the University of California at Berkeley. While Clarence pursued his Electrical Engineering Degree, Doris, with her chemistry background and former work on quality control at Weirton Steel, found work in the "radiation building". Doris worked with several future Nobel recipients on the cyclotron, as a health physicist helping to develop early radiological practices including glove boxes, the first widely used but now common radiation symbol, and at the time of her passing was one of the oldest Health Physicists still living that was associated with the Manhattan Project. Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood where in the past she served as a frequent hostess and Girl Scout leader. Doris was also the past President of the Edgewood Historical Society, the Edgewood Garden Club and the Duquesne Woman's Guild (1981-83, and 1997-2002). Doris is survived by daughter, Joyce Lynn Hobbs Educator, MA, MS of Martinsburg, WV, Cynthia Pauline Gallinger, MA, and husband, Dr. Roy, MD of Sylva, NC, Miann Elizabeth Jones, MBA, Rph Beckley, WV, Ronan L.
