William D. Gallagher


William ("Bill") D. Gallagher passed away at home on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the age of 87. Born on July 4, 1930, Bill was a life-long resident of Duquesne. Bill's great-grandparents, Barbara and Peter Zewe, were among the original settler families of Duquesne in 1853. Bill attended Duquesne High School, graduating in 1948. He went on to college at Duquesne University graduating from the School of Pharmacy in May 1952. In September of 1952, Bill was drafted by the army. After basic training in Virginia and three days before his infantry company was to ship out to Korea, the army realized Bill was a pharmacist. He received new orders to remain stateside and serve as a lab technician in an Alabama army hospital. Bill returned to Duquesne after the war and began his career as a pharmacist at family-owned Gallagher Pharmacy. When Bill retired in 2009, he closed the doors to the landmark Gallagher Pharmacy. At the time of its closing, Gallagher Pharmacy was the oldest continuously operated independent pharmacy in Allegheny county- 87 years in operation. During his tenure at Gallagher Pharmacy, Bill personally filled over 1 million prescriptions! He counseled thousands of customers, and in the last years of operation, Bill even personally delivered prescriptions to homebound customers. Bill was married to the late Agnes (Esek) Gallagher. Bill is now survived by his daughter, Patricia Kinn (Gary); his son, William Thomas Gallagher (Anne); and his two grandchildren, Luke and Shea Gallagher. Funeral services will take place at St. Joseph Church in Duquesne on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Arrangements by THOMAS L.
