Obituary of Michael A Shubak

MICHAEL ALBERT SHUBAK Age 60, of Coraopolis, formerly of Hampton Township passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2020, while in the MICU at Allegheny General Hospital of Coronavirus. Beloved son of the late Albert and Helen (Matsey) Shubak; oldest brother of Mary (John) Limbacher of Cranberry Township, Margaret (Russ) Adams of Allison Park, John of Economy Boro and Karla Joyce and the late Cecilia and James who died as infants. Michael was born on November 11, 1959 with Down's syndrome and autism in Pittsburgh at a time when doctors recommended that he be placed in a home and the couple not have other children. Sadly, in 1968, his devoted mother died of cancer and the family continued to help Michael thrive. Together with his siblings and father, he enjoyed visiting extended family for holidays, birthdays and weekends; bowling, swimming, building jigsaw puzzles and art; Disney movies especially Mickey Mouse and Superheroes Spiderman and Batman and traveled to Niagara Falls and Ottawa, Canada; St. Petersburg, Florida; and many amusement parks, including Disney World and Kennywood. Michael had many notable achievements. He is a graduate of Hampton Township's former Middle Road School. He learned to ride Port Authority from his longtime Greentree group home, under the care of Mercy Behavioral Health, to Pittsburgh and transfer to the Southside where he worked at Goodwill for more than 25 years. While he may have gotten detoured by stopping in Market Square to have a Coca-Cola, boarded the wrong bus or exited at the wrong stop, God kept him in His protection until He needed him home. Michael is also survived by loving nephews Andy, Daniel (Katie) Limbacher; nieces Claire Adams, Emily, Elizabeth and Olivia Shubak; uncle James Matsey of Richmond, VA; and lifelong friend Joyce Rabinovitz of Hampton Township along with many cousins and family friends. Michael joins his loving parents, two siblings, grandparents, and dearest uncles Ray, John, Jay, Bob, George and aunts Betty, Gabe, Joan, Delores, Pauline, Lorraine and Penny and Big Andy in heaven. Our hearts are broken as Michael and his kind, gentle spirit, his clever sense of humor, and ever ready smile will be forever missed. We are better for having him in our lives. Much appreciation to his caregivers, doctors, nurses who helped him fight until he couldn't. A celebration of Michael's life will be held at a time when we can safely be together. Donations may be made to Pittsburgh Mercy Behavioral Health, 1200 Reedsdale St., Pittsburgh, PA 15233 ( https://www.pittsburghmercy.org/give/give-to-our-mission/ ).
